MACHAKOS UNIVERSITY HOSTS THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION, COMMUNICATION, AND THE DIGITAL ECONOMY 6TH TOWN HALL MEETING

Machakos University recently hosted the 6th Town Hall meeting organized by the Ministry of Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, themed “Unlocking Potential Opportunities in the Digital Economy.” The event was led by the Permanent Secretary, Eng. John Tanui, who had earlier launched the second phase of the Digischool Internet Connectivity at the Machakos School for the Deaf in Machakos town.

Machakos University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo , delivered insightful opening remarks, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to fostering digital literacy, innovation, and research to drive technological advancement in Kenya. The PS, Eng. Tanui in his keynote address, emphasized the Government’s focus on enhancing connectivity and digitization to drive the digital economy. He highlighted efforts to support innovation and software development opportunities, ensuring that Kenya remains competitive in the global tech landscape.

The event attracted over 200 students who participated in two insightful panel discussions;
- Panel 1: Digital Platforms & Opportunities
- Panel 2: Government Contribution in Digital Opportunities for the Youth.
Key panelists included:
- Prof. Joyce Agalo- Vice Chancellor, Machakos University
- Mr. Stanley Kamanguya- CEO, Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA)
- Mr. John Paul Okwiri- CEO, Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA)
- Representatives from the office of the Data Protection Commissioner, State Department for Basic Education, INUA AI, E-Mobilis, TVET, and the State Department for Higher Education & Research.

The event brought together students from Machakos University, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), SCOTT University, Machakos Institute of Technology, Machakos Technical Institute, and Uwezo College. The panelists explored critical topics such as;
- Digital Opportunities
- Digital Skilling for Online Work
- Data Protection and Cybersecurity
- Inclusion in Digital Opportunities
- Jitume Hubs
- Government Contribution in Digital Opportunities for the Youth
- Startup Incubation and Training
The discussions provided students with valuable insights into the digital economy, empowering them with knowledge on available opportunities and the role of technology in shaping the future. The Ministry’s Town Hall meeting reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to fostering a digitally empowered youth, equipped with the skills and resources to thrive in Kenya’s evolving digital landscape.
