The visit to Machakos University showcased its centralized e-learning platform, which serves as the backbone of its digital pedagogy. The platform hosts course materials, virtual classes, and interactive assessments, all designed to support effective online learning. Particular emphasis was placed on how sound pedagogical integration is essential for competency-based and clinical programs, where practical skills and continuous assessment are critical.

The delegation also toured MKSU’s library facilities, where they observed the seamless integration between the e-learning platform and the Library Management System. This integration enables students and faculty to access e-books, academic journals, and specialized research databases directly from their course pages, ensuring timely access to essential academic and medical resources.

Web conferencing solutions formed another key area of learning. MKSU demonstrated how integrated virtual conferencing tools are used to deliver live lectures, seminars, and facilitate real-time interaction between instructors and students, including those learning remotely.

In addition, the university highlighted its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, which links student administration, academic records, and learning processes into a unified digital ecosystem. This approach streamlines institutional operations while providing students with a more efficient and cohesive learning experience. Automated examination management systems were also discussed, with a focus on online exam administration, proctoring, and grading as vital tools for maintaining academic integrity and administrative efficiency.

The visit concluded with both institutions expressing a strong commitment to collaboration. Plans are underway to establish formal channels for ongoing knowledge exchange, including technical workshops for NWHC staff and the exploration of joint research initiatives on the effectiveness of e-learning in medical education.

Overall, the benchmarking visit underscored Machakos University’s position as a leader in digital learning innovation within Kenya’s higher education sector. It also laid a solid foundation for a potential partnership aimed at significantly advancing the digital capacity of healthcare education. By embracing flexible e-learning systems, integrating academic resources, and streamlining administration, the collaboration holds promise for improving access, quality, and efficiency in the training of healthcare professionals nationwide.
