Shaping the Molecular Future at Machakos University

Machakos University marked a significant academic milestone on 17th April 2026, as the School of Pure and Applied Sciences, through the Department of Biological Sciences, hosted a pioneering laboratory session for the inaugural cohort of the Master of Science in Molecular Diagnostics.

The session was led by Dr. Christabel Muhonja of Machakos University, with expert support from Ms. Catherine Eyinda of JKUAT and the Institute for Biotechnology and Research (IBR). The students undertook a comprehensive mock practical, marking the first time advanced molecular diagnostic techniques of this scale have been conducted on campus.

Through a hands-on and immersive experience, the students engaged in core molecular biology protocols using E. coli. The practical focused on three fundamental processes central to molecular diagnostics: DNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification, and gel electrophoresis for DNA visualization using a UV transilluminator.

As the pioneer cohort, the five students-Vivian Murkomen, Edith Wambui, Lawrence Muteti, Patricia Sikuku, and Moses Ongaro-are laying a strong foundation for future research at the University. The competencies gained will be instrumental in their second-year research projects, positioning them to address critical global challenges, including alternative cancer treatments, microbial diversity, and food security through genetic innovation. This milestone underscores a new era of scientific advancement at Machakos University. With modern laboratory facilities and guidance from experienced experts, the University continues to strengthen its position as a centre of excellence in biotechnology research and innovation.
