From Freshers to Future Leaders: Machakos University Celebrates Finalists in a Transformative Send-Off Ceremony

A remarkable atmosphere of pride, reflection, and anticipation filled Machakos University as finalists gathered for a memorable ceremony marking the end of their academic journey and the beginning of a new chapter. The event opened on a vibrant and uplifting note, with the university choir delivering soulful performances that warmly welcomed students and guests, setting the stage for an inspiring and impactful occasion.

Guided seamlessly by the Dean of Students, assisted by the Career Office Coordinator, Ms Ruth Munene, the programme offered a rich blend of celebration and practical insight, thoughtfully designed to prepare finalists for life beyond the University. The ceremony was graced by key University leaders, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (ASA) Prof. James Muola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (APF) CPA Prof. Florence Memba, Registrar (ASA) Mr. Patrick Okemba, among other distinguished guests.
In her keynote address, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo officially opened the ceremony with a powerful and reflective message, noting that the event was also a heartfelt way of saying thank you to the students for choosing Machakos University. She celebrated the remarkable transformation of the finalists from uncertain first-year students to confident, capable, and driven professionals ready to take on the world. Recognizing the resilience of the 2022 cohort, she urged them to embrace the future with courage, remain grounded, and uphold the values instilled during their time at the University.

Prof. Agalo also commended exemplary student leadership, recognizing individuals such as Agnes Kavindu, Ashley Chepkoech, Jacob Chege, Joseph Ngoma, and other student leaders for their outstanding commitment to service, growth, and excellence. She emphasized that their journeys reflect the University’s mission to nurture not only graduates, but transformative leaders. In a deeply inspiring moment, she echoed the promise of Jeremiah 29:11, reminding students that their future is filled with purpose and possibility.
Adding further inspiration, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (APF), CPA Prof. Florence Memba, quoted Isaiah 43:19, encouraging students to take responsibility for their lives and to become exemplary alumni who positively represent the University wherever they go. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (ASA) urged the finalists to continuously add value to their degrees to enhance their employability and remain competitive in the evolving job market.
The technical session, led by keynote speaker CPA Moses Mwariri, provided practical guidance on navigating life after graduation. He equipped students with essential skills in CV writing, interview preparation, compliance with institutions such as the Kenya Revenue Authority and eCitizen, as well as building strong professional profiles. His message was clear and compelling: success comes when preparation meets opportunity.

The Alumni Coordinator, Ms Nthenya Mark, delivered an insightful presentation highlighting the critical role of the alumni network, including opportunities for networking, mentorship, and collaborative projects. Her address underscored the importance of staying connected and leveraging the strength of the Machakos University community beyond graduation.
Distinguished alumni also shared powerful real-world perspectives. Ms Majiwa Mwasenzi encouraged students to embrace volunteering, pursue continuous professional development, and give back to society. Fellow alumnus Vincent Were emphasized the importance of critical thinking, understanding systems, and building transferable skills, while urging students to remain grounded in strong values.
From the public sector, Mr. Geoffrey Lenjiling, Machakos County Employment Officer, highlighted the diverse employment opportunities available to the youth both locally and internationally. He further emphasized the role of the National Employment Authority (NEA) in protecting young job seekers from exploitation, ensuring access to accurate information for informed career decisions.
Ms Mary Mogana from SHOFCO underscored the growing importance of soft skills in today’s job market, advising finalists to be proactive and create opportunities for themselves by identifying and meeting emerging needs.
The ceremony also reaffirmed Machakos University’s enduring commitment to its graduates through the vibrant Machakos University Alumni Association. More than a send-off, the event stood as a bold celebration of growth and a defining transition into a lifelong network of connection, mentorship, and shared success.
As the finalists step into the next phase of their journey, they carry with them not only academic knowledge but also the skills, values, and networks needed to thrive, ready to shape the future and make a meaningful impact in society.
