Machakos University Empowers TVET Students on Intellectual Property Rights

Machakos University and Kenya Industrial Property Institute yesterday, 7th May 2026, strengthened the culture of innovation and research through the 2nd Training on Intellectual Property Rights for TVET students, organized by the Office of the Director, Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer (RITT).

The training was officially graced by Prof. (CPA) Florence Memba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Planning and Finance), who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce J. Agalo. She reaffirmed the University’s commitment to nurturing, protecting, and commercializing student innovations in line with national and global intellectual property frameworks.
The session was coordinated by Prof. Charles Ombuki, Director of RITT, alongside Prof. Kimiti Richard Peter, Dean of the Graduate School, and other senior faculty members.

The training featured Ms. Belinda Ilagosa, Patent Examiner at Kenya Industrial Property Institute, who delivered insightful presentations on industrial property protection, patent rights, and the role of global intellectual property bodies such as the World Intellectual Property Organization and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization.
The initiative marks another significant milestone in equipping Machakos University students with the knowledge and skills needed to safeguard their innovations and thrive in the global innovation ecosystem.
