Machakos University Hosts Mount Kenya University for Benchmarking Tour on Health Sciences Excellence

Machakos University today hosted a delegation from Mount Kenya University for a benchmarking tour aimed at strengthening excellence in Health Sciences education and practical training.

The visit focused on enhancing practical learning environments, with the delegation touring the University’s state-of-the-art Skills Laboratory, Food Science Laboratory, and General Laboratory that support the Department of Health Sciences. The tour was led by Dr. Esther Muia, Chair of the Department of Health Sciences at Machakos University.

Dr. Muia, alongside Dr. John Mbaka, Chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Ms. Consolate Okoth, Tutorial Fellow, and Ms. Faith Wambua, Assistant Lab Technologist, guided the visitors through the specialized facilities and equipment while highlighting the importance of maintaining stand-alone laboratories to effectively support teaching, research, and innovation in Health Sciences.

The delegation also paid a courtesy call to the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Richard Kimiti, standing in for Prof. James Muola, who warmly welcomed the team and emphasized the importance of benchmarking among institutions of higher learning. He noted that collaboration and the sharing of best practices are essential in enhancing quality education, research, and innovation to meet the evolving needs of society.

The visiting delegation from Mount Kenya University was led by Dr. John Kariuki, Dean of the School of Public Health. Speaking after the tour, Dr. Kariuki commended Machakos University for its impressive infrastructure, innovation, and commitment to practical training in Health Sciences. He noted that the benchmarking exercise provided valuable insights that would help enhance learner experiences at MKU.

Dr. Kariuki was accompanied by senior technical staff, including Mr. Eliud Ng’ang’a, Principal of Laboratories, Mr. Gitau G. Kariuki, Lab Technologist, and Mr. Benard Nderitu, Lab Engineer.

The successful benchmarking visit reflects Machakos University’s growing reputation as a center of excellence in Health Sciences education and its continued commitment to fostering academic partnerships that advance higher education and professional training.
