Machakos University Strengthens Global Research Partnership through POWER-VET Project

Machakos University has continued to strengthen its global engagement agenda through academic and research collaboration by bringing together academic and administrative representatives from partner institutions across the world. On 6th to 7th May 2026, the University participated in the European Union (EU) funded POWER-VET (Promoting Opportunities for Workforce Excellence in Renewable Energy Vocational Education and Training) Project, at Strathmore University. The University was represented by Prof. Stanley M. Makindi (the Project Manager), Eng. Dr. Charles Mwaniki, Mr. Nicholus Mwunda, Dr. John Musau and Dr. Joel Kitheka.

The POWER-VET project is funded through the EU ERASMUS Lump Sum Grant. The project is an initiative designed to enhance vocational education and training (VET) in Kenya by equipping trainers with essential skills in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The project aims to strengthen the capacity of VET institutions, fostering a skilled workforce capable of supporting the country’s green and digital transition. It is driven by a consortium of eight(8) partners from three (3) countries: Kenya, Greece, and Belgium – Machakos University, Strathmore University, University of West Attica, Olympic Training & Consulting Ltd, Readlab Brussels, TVET CDACC, Strathmore Educational Trust, and Citiscope Training Institute. The workshop was officially opened by Prof. Izael Da Silva (DVC, Research and Innovation) at Strathmore University.

The meeting formed the official project launch and partner introductions, and involved a series of activities, including, a review of work packages, deliverables, timelines, and partner responsibilities, governance, communication, and financial management procedures, action planning and next steps. The Project Officer from the EU addressed the meeting virtually.

The workshop ended with a tour of the labs and Solar power plant at the Strathmore University.
