SAMU Leaders Induction: Machakos University Strengthens Student Leadership and Governance

Machakos University successfully hosted a comprehensive induction programme for newly elected Student Association of Machakos University (SAMU) leaders at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization Centre in Machakos, aimed at enhancing leadership capacity and strengthening governance among student representatives.

The two-day induction provided a solid foundation for effective, value-driven leadership. Day One featured insightful sessions led by the Dean of Students, Dr. James Karau, who underscored the importance of understanding University procedures, as well as developing essential competencies in leadership, emotional intelligence, and mental health.

Participants also benefited from expert guidance by Prof. Henry Embeywa of RIAP Education and Training Consultants, who emphasized effective leadership principles, alignment of goals with the student body and the University’s vision, and adherence to key frameworks such as the SAMU Constitution and the Students’ Code of Conduct.

Additional sessions enriched the programme, including a mental health and wellness training by Ms. Rose Ngondi from Chiromo Hospital Group. She emphasized the importance of self-awareness, self-care, and building emotional intelligence through enhanced social awareness and relationship management.

A finance session led by CPA Mary Wambua, on behalf of the Chief Finance Officer, CPA Francis Wambua, focused on budgeting, financial planning, and accountability within the SAMU docket. Student leaders were guided to align their budgets with the University’s strategic plan, prioritize student welfare, particularly bursaries, and explore funding opportunities through partnerships, donations, and co-funding, while adhering to procurement procedures, as explained by Ms. Catherine Muli of the Procurement department.

The induction also featured a security briefing by the Head of Security, Mr. Jacob Mutava, who emphasized vigilance, proper emergency response, and shared responsibility in safeguarding University assets. Students were further advised to carry their student and national identification documents at all times.

Building on this strong foundation, Day Two focused on strengthening leadership practice and governance. The Vice-Chancellor, Joyce J. Agalo, called on student leaders to cultivate a lasting legacy through servant leadership, adherence to protocol, mentorship, and accountability. She particularly stressed fairness and transparency in bursary allocation to ensure support reaches deserving students.

Further guidance was provided by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), James Muola, and the Registrar (ASA), Mr. Patrick Okemba, who challenged the leaders to uphold integrity, communicate effectively, and deliver on their mandate. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Planning and Finance), CPA, Prof. Florence Memba, encouraged the adoption of authentic, innovative, and purpose-driven leadership.

Additionally, the Senior Legal Officer, Ms. Mumbi Mwihurih, highlighted the importance of aligning student leadership with key governance frameworks, including the Constitution of Kenya, the Universities Act, and the SAMU Constitution. A practical session by RIAP Education and Training Consultants further equipped participants with conflict resolution skills essential for effective leadership.

The induction marked a significant milestone in preparing SAMU leaders to serve with integrity, competence, and vision. Machakos University remains committed to nurturing transformative student leadership through continuous capacity building, mentorship, and a supportive, student-centred environment.
