Machakos University has intensified its commitment to quality teacher training through a comprehensive briefing session for lecturers undertaking the upcoming Teaching Practice (TP) Assessments. Held on 12th May 2026, the session prepared assessors to evaluate more than 2,000 student-teachers deployed across various regions, including Nairobi, Kajiado, Kitui, Mombasa, Meru, and Makueni.

Speaking during the briefing, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce J. Agalo, emphasized the importance of professionalism, integrity, and empathy throughout the assessment exercise. She encouraged lecturers to adopt a care-led approach by offering psychosocial support to students adapting to diverse teaching environments, while ensuring that learning remains practical, impactful, and sustainable within communities.

The session featured guidance from key academic leaders, including Dr. Pamela Muriungi, Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Francis Mutua, the Teaching Practice Coordinator, Prof. David Mulwa, Ag. Registrar, Research, Innovation, and Linkages, and Prof. Henry Embeywa, Chairman of the Department for Educational Communication Technology and Early Childhood Education. The team outlined expectations for the 64-member assessment panel, with emphasis on Competency-Based Education (CBE), mentorship, teamwork, and practical learning outcomes.
Assessors were further encouraged to uphold professionalism by providing constructive feedback respectfully and in private, while promoting self-reflection among student-teachers. Through its robust Teaching Practice programme, Machakos University continues to nurture competent, innovative, and socially responsible educators ready to transform Kenya’s education sector.
