Machakos University Strengthens Productivity Excellence Through Productivity Mainstreaming Training

Machakos University has reinforced its commitment to institutional excellence after members of the University’s Productivity Mainstreaming Committee, comprising process owners, successfully completed a two-day Productivity Mainstreaming and Productivity Index Computation training held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Nairobi, on 27th and 28th June 2026.

The training, organized by the Department of Performance Contracting and Quality Management Systems and facilitated by National Productivity and Competitiveness Centre (NPCC) officers Mr. Samuel Mulei and Ms. Emily Mwita, focused on the Government’s new productivity framework and the computation of the Productivity Index.

Participants were sensitized on key productivity objectives, including improving internal operations, enhancing public service delivery, strengthening employee engagement, and promoting financial sustainability through measurable performance indicators.

The facilitators highlighted a new directive from the Head of Public Service introducing productivity as a key component of Performance Contracting beginning with the 23rd Performance Contracting Cycle (FY 2026/2027). The reforms will increasingly link employee performance, career progression, and rewards to productivity outcomes.

During the training, the committee submitted and validated departmental performance metrics for the 2025/2026 financial year. Following an analysis by NPCC officials, a provisional Productivity Index indicated notable improvement, with the official results expected in August 2026.

The facilitators further emphasized the need for continuous productivity training for the University’s leadership, process owners, and staff to cultivate a sustainable culture of excellence, efficiency, innovation, and continuous improvement.
