Machakos University Welcomes First-Year Students at a Colourful Matriculation Ceremony

More than 3,000 first-year students have officially joined the Machakos University community following a colourful matriculation ceremony held today, 28^th August 2026, at the University’s graduation grounds, marking the beginning of their academic journey at the Home of Excellence.

The ceremony brought together the University Management, Deans of Schools, Chairs of Departments, Directors, Heads of Divisions, the University Librarian, Student Leaders and members of the University community to formally welcome the new cohort. The students were introduced to the University officials and student leaders before taking the Matriculation Oath, committing themselves to responsible conduct, academic discipline and the pursuit of excellence across their programmes in the Schools of Education; Agriculture; Business, Economics, Hospitality and Tourism Management; Pure and Applied Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Engineering and Technology; and TVET.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. James Muola, welcomed the students and emphasized the importance, hard of academic discipline work, commitment and regular class attendance. He reminded the students that the Academic and Student Affairs Division is central to supporting their academic journey and encouraged them to take their studies seriously from the very beginning. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Planning and Finance, Prof. Florence Memba, urged the students to take good care of University assets and resources and to remain responsible and focused throughout their studies. She also encouraged them to uphold strong values and live responsibly. The Registrar, Academic and Student Affairs, informed the students that their student portals were already active, enabling them to access essential academic and University services.

Addressing the new students, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce J. Agalo, congratulated them on successfully completing their secondary education and securing admission to Machakos University. “Life has no rehearsal,” the Vice-Chancellor reminded the students, challenging them to make purposeful decisions, build strong personalities and character, and take charge of the people they aspire to become.

Prof. Agalo urged the students to make meaningful use of their time at the University by attending classes faithfully, embracing academic excellence and actively participating in co-curricular activities, research and innovation. She encouraged them to take advantage of the University’s digital resources, including internet hotspots, as well as short courses that can complement their academic programmes and enhance their competitiveness in the job market.

The Vice-Chancellor further cautioned the students against misusing the freedom that comes with university life, urging them to avoid drugs, alcoholism, unhealthy relationships and irresponsible use of social media. She encouraged them to establish healthy boundaries, think independently and make choices that safeguard their future. Prof. Agalo also highlighted the University’s ongoing efforts to enhance student welfare and learning infrastructure, including the development of modern student hostels to improve the accommodation experience.

“You made the right choice by choosing Machakos University, your dreams are valid,” she told the students, challenging them to utilize their time well, pursue their passions, nurture their talents and make a positive contribution to the University community. She called upon the new students to carry the spirit of excellence with them throughout their University journey and beyond, while protecting and strengthening the reputation of Machakos University.

As the new cohort embarks on this exciting chapter, Machakos University warmly welcomes them to the University community and wishes them a transformative, fulfilling and successful academic journey.
