Machakos University Strengthens Global Footprint Through Strategic Partnership with Fuzhou Polytechnic University

Machakos University has taken another significant step in advancing its internationalization agenda following the signing of a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fuzhou Polytechnic University, China, onTuesday, 7 July 2026. The agreement will establish the Machakos Maritime Silk Road Institute, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership that will strengthen academic collaboration, innovation, research, and global engagement between the two institutions.

The MoU was signed during a visit by a delegation from Fuzhou Polytechnic University led by its President, Mr. Chen Niandong. The delegation was received by Machakos University Management led by the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Linkages), Prof. James Muola, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo.

The partnership is designed to enhance the quality of teaching, research, innovation, and international collaboration while equipping students with the global competencies required to thrive in today’s interconnected world. Through the Machakos Maritime Silk Road Institute, the two universities will work together to create transformative learning opportunities that enrich academic excellence and institutional growth.

Key areas of collaboration include student and staff exchange programmes, joint curriculum development, collaborative research, academic resource sharing, online learning initiatives, and the promotion of international education. These initiatives will expose students and staff to diverse academic environments, strengthen intercultural understanding, and improve graduates’ employability in the global marketplace.

The partnership will also support Chinese language training for Machakos University students interested in pursuing further studies or career opportunities with Chinese universities and enterprises, enhancing their competitiveness in the international labour market while strengthening educational ties between Kenya and China.

The agreement will remain in force for an initial period of five years, with the option for renewal by mutual consent, reflecting the shared commitment of both institutions to building sustainable partnerships that promote academic excellence, innovation, and global cooperation.

Speaking on the significance of the collaboration during a courtesy call by the Fuzhou Polytechnic University delegation, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joyce Agalo described the MoU as another milestone in Machakos University’s expanding network of international partnerships. She noted that such collaborations create invaluable opportunities for students and staff to access world-class learning experiences, strengthen research capacity, and advance the University’s vision of becoming a globally competitive institution of higher learning.

This partnership reaffirms Machakos University’s commitment to producing globally competitive graduates, driving impactful research and innovation, and building strategic international partnerships that create lasting value for the University, its students, and society.
